Mary Kay Cosmetics

The Company

Mary Kay Ash
Founded in September 1963 by the visionary Mary Kay Ash, over the last 47 years Mary Kay Cosmetics has become a global leader in offering high quality skincare, colour cosmetics, and an amazing working opportunity to women everywhere. Operating today in more than 35 markets and with an independent sales force exceeding 2 million, the company’s triumph is clear. In 2009 alone, Mary Kay achieved $2.5 billion in wholesale sales, continuing to grow on the strength of a great product line and an opportunity for women to achieve personal and professional success that resonates around the world.

The Opportunity

Company HQ in Dallas
In launching her company, Mary Kay Ash used the positive and negative experiences of a twenty-five year career in direct sales to create a company that promised something different, something unique, to women: opportunity. The opportunity to work for themselves in a business that has unlimited potential for self-advancement; the opportunity to organise life’s priorities in a way that suites them; and the opportunity above all to be successful in a company that encourages and supports women to be all that they can be.

The How

Focusing on bettering people, not profit, Mary Kay Cosmetics operates based on the golden rule of treating others, as you would wish to be treated. In practice, this makes for a simple business model that emphasises rewarding women fairly for the work that they do.

Independent sales force members have the opportunity to earn handsomely in Mary Kay. They purchase products from the company at a set wholesale price and then sell to their customers at a retail price. In the UK, Beauty Consultants and Directors typically make 40% profit on the products they buy, though as independent working women they can give customers discount in the same way that they decide what hours they want to work.
A bestseller: The Miracle Set
The career path

Armed with great products, a proven business plan, and the support of other women in Mary Kay, the sky really is the limit. Everyone starts out as an Independent Beauty Consultant providing beauty advice and selling skincare and colour cosmetics to friends and family. It is then up to each individual how fair they rise in the company.

The 2011/12 Director's Suit
Many join Mary Kay only to earn a little extra money and are happy to stay at the Beauty Consultant level, making great money through their sales, and even a small commission through sharing the career opportunity. Others have bigger dreams such as fully replacing another career, and work to move on to Directorship, the first position of leadership in the company.

The 2011/12 National Sales Director Suit
Independent Sales Directors are special women, who have proven themselves as sellers and team-builders. Continuing to earn great money through selling the products, and continually seeking out new customers to make this happen, they are also experts in spotting the potential to be great in others. Working hard to help other women make a success of their business, Directors benefit from increased commissions for their efforts.

The Mary Kay career ladder culminates in the position of Independent National Sales Director, and unlike in other companies, this position is open to all if they’re prepared to do the work for it. The reward? Increased commissions based on the productivity of those they shared the career opportunity with, and the honour of being a National Sales Director. As sales force leaders they are in a unique position to promote the company’s ideals and really help women to achieve all they are capable of. Inspirations, they do this by focusing their time of teaching, motivating and mentoring other women, both within their sales force area and throughout the company.

My personal fairytale

Meet Yvonne

Before I began my Mary Kay business, I owned and operated two successful hairdressing salons. I didn’t wear makeup, had no idea about glamour application, and I enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. My name is Yvonne Williams and I am an Independent National Sales Director.

It’s a good thing we can only see the future one day at a time. My future changed drastically when my partner lost his property business in the early 90s. We owed school fees, mortgage payments, and each day was a struggle to keep the bailiffs at bay. My income from the salons was simply not sufficient to meet our financial needs.

When Mary Kay had their UK Grand Opening in 1993, I signed my Beauty Consultant Agreement and got to work. I had used the skin care on holiday in America, fallen in love with the results, and I needed the extra income.

I wasn’t an ideal recruit. I already worked six days a week and two late evenings. But I knew I needed the money, so I put my Mary Kay into my schedule and held classes on Sundays.

Little did I realize that my Mary Kay business was going to help me make all my dreams come true. Quickly, I learned that everyone loved the products and many of the guests at my skin care classes wanted the Mary Kay opportunity for themselves. Within nine months, I had promoted myself to Independent Sales Director status, and that was truly the start of my personal fairy tale.

Seventeen years later, I am living the dream with my Mary Kay business. I am blessed to work with amazing women who truly want to enrich their lives and the lives of other women. You can get it, if you truly want it.

The Great Opportunity

Dyane

My name is Dyane, and I am an Independent Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. Before Mary Kay, I worked in local government as a Principal Complaints and Policy Officer for the Director of Finance at a London council.

Over time, I became disillusioned with my experience in local government, and whilst carrying my third child, I learned of the Mary Kay opportunity. Actively looking for something new, I became a consultant because I realised that I could make Mary Kay work around the other things I wanted to do in my life.

I have stayed in Mary Kay through the years, as I believe in the opportunity. I have experienced huge personal growth during my MK career, which has helped me exceed my own expectations personally and professionally.

I have won prizes including topaz rings and bracelets - gifts that let me know that I am valued by Mary Kay in a way that local government never did! And I have the pleasure every day of introducing women to the products and company ethics that I love.

For me, Mary Kay remains, as always, the great opportunity.

England Netball

We at the BeautyDome are pleased to announce that we are now proud supporters of England Netball.

As Mary Kay Cosmetics beauty consultants and Directors, we work with a company that places an unwavering emphasis on empowering and enriching women personally and professionally, through the kinds of bonds we form with our colleagues, and the relationships we develop with our customers. That’s why we feel it is such a privilege to have a new association with an organisation like England Netball, which has such a positive effect on the health, enjoyment and personal development of its netball players.

Our new linkup has already gone into effect, and in the next few months we will be attending each regional AGM and awards, providing high-value table gifts, and manning a stand for the curious to come and try our products and learn a little about our business. We hope to see you there, because there is so much Mary Kay has to offer in terms of business opportunities and a product range that fits the active lifestyle of the casual or serious athlete.

Some of you may already have spoken to us at the West Midlands and North West AGMs than occurred last week. Thank you so much for your warm welcome. We very much enjoyed being a part of your events, and particularly the chance we had to talk to those of you who came to our stand.

Working for myself. What could be better?

Lisa Jean

Hello, I’m Lisa Jean Skinner. Born in the USA, living in the UK, I hold a BA and a Professional LPC in Law that I used in building a successful career with Pricewaterhouse Coopers as a Global Taxation Consultant.

My husband Simon, a Commercial Manager for Hoover Candy, was relocating to the Rossendale Valley, and this coincided with me re-evaluating my career and lifestyle aspirations.

Dallas Seminar
Joining the company in February 2004, Mary Kay came into my life at just the right time. It offered me the chance to be my own boss, to work the hours I wanted, and to make a great income for myself, not profit for others. Empowering women really is at the heart of what Mary Kay is about.

I qualified as a Sales Director in June 2005, and over the last seven years, joining Mary Kay has proved the best decision I could have made. Not only have I won a fabulous diamond bumblebee as No. 2 in UK Sales, and a paid trip to our Dallas HQ, Mary Kay has given me the most precious gift of all: control over my own destiny.
